In the course of Petroleum Exploration activities in Nigeria, large volumes of basic field data are acquired for evaluation and analysis at various stages. Information is extraction from these data over years with additional and more valuable data extraction being enhanced as technology improved from years to years. For these reasons and because of the high expenditures incurred in field acquisition of these data, Industry operators usually archive them for postmortem and re-evaluation as soon as new technologies become available. These data are;
-
Geophysical and Petrophysical data recorded on magnetic media of different capacities and forms.
-
Geological data like sidewall samples, core, ditch, sand etc
Presently, in the Nigeria Petroleum Industry, all the major operators (except Shell) store their archive data overseas in either their head office or with affiliated companies or third party specialist contractors, which abound in Europe and North America.
Hitherto, there has been no company in the country set up to provide the required facilities and services. Hence, the bulk of data from the Nigeria oil operations are presently stored abroad, a situation that is not in Nigeria strategic interest. In fact, in this respect, Nigeria falls well behind many third world countries in spite of Nigeria being one of the oldest and largest oil producing countries.
With this, highly placed Professionals in the oil and gas sector of the industry had thought of the disadvantage of our countries oil and gas data in overseas country.
To redress the situation, Petrodata Management Services Ltd a wholly Nigerian company was established in 1994 for this purpose to pioneer the service for the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.
The company opened for business in October 1999 with state-of-the-art facilities that match the best in the world. Since then, representatives of the major oil companies have visited to inspect its facilities and recorded very positive impressions. In particular, NNPC NAPIMS (National Petroleum Investment and Management Services) carried out an inspection visit to the company and expressed satisfaction with the high standard of the facilities in place.
NAPIMS has written letters of introduction to the oil companies for patronage of Petrodata with a view of repatriating Nigerian Petroleum data in storage abroad. This has resulted in patronage of about 13 exploration and production companies.
The ongoing push by the Department of Petroleum Resources to establish a National Data Repository (NDR) in Nigeria will eventually make it mandatory for all Oil companies to at least have a copy of their datasets in Nigeria. Petrodata Management Services Limited is well positioned to be a major participant in this project.
